MAJOR MOTORSPORT EVENT CONFIRMED FOR PORT LINCOLN STARTING IN 2017
The inaugural “Teakle Auto Sprint – Port Lincoln” motorsport event will take to the city’s streets over the Easter Weekend in April 2017.
The EP Autosports Club has conducted extensive consultation and has developed the event concept, which has been support by Port Lincoln Council, resulting in a huge opportunity for Port Lincoln to host a major motorsport event in our region.
There will be 75 competitors participating across the Easter long weekend in a street circuit sprint event, where drivers will compete against each other for points. The race track will involve sections of Tasman Terrace, Porter Street, Liverpool Street and Railway Terrace, with the Foreshore Reserve set up as the base for teams’ and cars’ preparation.
The Port Lincoln City Council will financially support this major motorsport event with $20,000 initial seed funding plus $5,000 in-kind support to help the organisers establish this exciting event and, with the support of the community, turn it into an annual event attracting participants and visitors.
Mayor Green said, “I am very excited about this fresh event, which has been generated through strong community initiative and support. It will create colour, action and excitement for everyone in our region as well as important visitor exposure for Port Lincoln”.
“It is fantastic to see a passionate committee work extremely hard to bring this kind of event to Port Lincoln for the community”, Mayor Green said.
It is estimated that 3000 to 5000 spectators will attend the two-day event, creating spending in the region of $1 million.
Major naming rights sponsor Peter Teakle says, “We are delighted to be working with EP Autosports and the City of Port Lincoln to bring such an exciting event to the streets of Port Lincoln over the Easter long weekend next year.”
“We are proud to have secured a three year naming rights major sponsorship agreement and aim to use our contacts and experience to generate publicity and revenue that will benefit not only Port Lincoln, but the entire region”, Peter Teakle Wines said.
The Confederation of Australian Motor Sports (CAMS) has backed the event, ensuring participants and spectators will experience the highest possible safety standards and event management.
EP Autosports has worked tirelessly with local businesses who are located around the proposed track to ensure they are supportive of the event. CAMS officials have inspected the track, with spectator areas allocated so members of the public and visitors can enjoy the spectacle.
Road closures will be in place from Friday April 14 to Tuesday 18 April 2017 to secure the circuit.
